NI coffee merchants win Dubai deal

A County Antrim coffee merchants has won a significant export deal to supply coffee to Dubai – and already shipped the first 1,000,000 cups of its specialist espresso, it was announced today.

Gourmet coffee roaster Coffee Merchants specialises in roasting high quality espresso and filter coffee and the first order has been dispatched for use in the rapidly expanding luxury hotel market in the Middle Eastern holiday hot spot.

Martin Symington, managing director of the company founded in Lisburn in 2005, said they saw a market opportunity for their products during a market research trip to Dubai in February.

He said: "There is a growing coffee culture in Dubai and other Gulf States as branded coffee bars expand throughout the region.

"Given the influence in Dubai of western style coffee shops like Starbucks, we decided to use the Java Trading Co brand which the company has rights for throughout Europe and the Middle East."

Mr Symington said they had found an ambitious trading partner with an excellent network of customers in both retail and food service throughout the Middle East.

Coffee Merchants has previously won orders from Finland and Holland. "We recognised from a very early stage that we had to look beyond Ireland to build sales," said Mr Symington.
