Mokena to construct a retail center this summer

Construction on a new retail center in Mokena may start as early as this summer after the village board on Monday approved annexing the property into the village.

The Mokena Village Board approved annexing the half-acre site at 19707 S. LaGrange Road and rezoning the property as general commercial.

village Development Director Alan Zordan said, "Headmasters Beauty Salon will be demolished and an 8,000-square-foot building would be constructed."

The developer, Mokena Commercial Plaza LLC, has not yet determined what type of retail will be located in the center, said Mike Stanula, the architect for the project and owner's representative. The developer will build an 8-foot-wide sidewalk along LaGrange Road, Zordan said.

"I think it will be a pleasant change," Trustee Laura Rusiniak said.

The change would allow businesses such as bowling alleys, miniature golf, swimming, indoor baseball, gymnastics and "other activities requiring higher ceiling heights than are found in most commercial buildings," retiring development director Paul Gorte said.

Officials said, "In related business, the village board also amended the zoning ordinance to prohibit "edge lighting" on the borders of doors and windows on village businesses. Businesses that currently have the lighting will be "grandfathered" in and be allowed to keep the lighting."
